It’s been a while since the last blog and, after reading this, you’ll understand why.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a people person. Always had lots of friends and, over the years, have built big networks of relationships with a wide variety of people. This ability has been absolutely crucial to my career.
But the irony is that the most important relationship of my life has suffered, changed and ended.
My marriage.
We met at 22 and, at 44, came to the realisation that we’d stopped making each other happy so made the tough decision to split. Whilst obviously very sad, the reality is that what once connected us when we were younger died years ago and, over the last few years, our wants and needs from life have become evidently very different. Thankfully, unlike other broken relationships I know of, we remain amicable which has meant our 3 sons have adjusted very quickly to their new realities without any evident trauma.
I understand relationships change over time and that some become better and some become worse…it’s still shit though and difficult to not reflect and wonder…
Did I prioritise work too much?
Should I have made more effort to support her hobbies?
Would me sacrificing some of mine have helped?
And I’ve come to the conclusion that, regardless of the answers, I can’t go back in time and can only try and learn from this. Does that mean I’m preparing for how to be a better husband 2nd time around? HELL NO – nowhere near ready for that sorry ladies and, at this time, not sure I’ll ever be but maybe I can take something from this forward into my life and that somehow makes me a better person. Maybe.
I usually try and link real life scenarios to my work life but this isn’t one of those ‘my marriage broke down and this is what it taught me about B2B sales‘ – I’m just sharing as it’s somewhat cathartic and might be useful to someone else going through something similar.
DM me if this resonates and speaking might help you.
